Portsmouth’s Gunwharf Quays plans to overhaul its harbour-facing waterfront as part of its 25th anniversary celebrations.
Landsec, owner of Gunwharf Quays, has submitted a planning application to Portsmouth City Council to transform the waterfront, the next stage of a wider £45m investment project. If approved, works to the Waterfront will commence in early 2027.
Key elements of the plans include enlarging and extending ground and first-floor terraces, to enhance al-fresco dining locations overlooking the marina. Other changes include introducing a new public feature staircase and lift for improved access between levels, and refreshing seating areas while also bringing underused spaces back to life.

The redevelopment plans are designed to reconfigure some spaces on the waterfront to bring leading dining and leisure experiences to Gunwharf Quays and Portsmouth.
The Old Customs House, a Grade II listed building, will remain untouched as part of these plans.
Gunwharf Quays opened its doors on 28 February 2001. SailGP was held in Portsmouth last year and the city is part of a thriving UK south coast marine network.
Yvonne Clay, centre director at Gunwharf Quays, says: “This is an incredibly special year for us. As Gunwharf Quays celebrates 25 years and Portsmouth marks 100 years of city status, it feels like the perfect moment to look ahead, as well as reflect on all we have achieved.
“For a quarter of a century, Gunwharf Quays has been part of Portsmouth’s identity – welcoming millions of guests, supporting local communities, and helping to showcase this incredible waterfront city. These plans for the waterfront represent our commitment to investing in the next 25 years of the destination.
“We are shaping a harbour-side experience unlike anywhere else in the UK – one that fully embraces our waterfront setting, attracts best-in-class brands, and creates a vibrant, high-quality place for our guests to spend time. If our submission is approved, this transformation will cement Gunwharf Quays’ position as the UK’s leading waterfront outlet destination, that complements the city’s proud heritage and exciting future, for decades to come.”
