UK-based marine tech firm Zelim has strengthened its leadership team with the appointment of John Cumming as director of international business development.
In his new role, Cumming will spearhead the company’s global market expansion and drive strategic partnerships across key commercial sectors, including ferries, defence, superyachts and the wider maritime industry.
He joins the company as it charts numerous recent successes – Zelim achieved ISO 21195:2020 certification for its ZOE man-overboard detection technology and has secured high-profile contracts with Canadian operator BC Ferries alongside a major offshore energy operator.
Cumming joins Zelim from Northern Ireland’s Artemis Technologies, where he managed business development, sales and product strategy for the company’s zero-emission foiling vessels. His professional background spans corporate finance, commercial ferries, defence and offshore services. Cumming spent ten years in the British Army leading infantry and specialist teams, which included a two-year tenure developing novel technology within strategic command’s innovation hub.
Cumming’s appointment marks the latest step in Zelim’s ongoing expansion, with its leadership team having doubled in size since 2023.
Sam Mayall, Zelim’s founder and CEO, says: “John joins us during a very promising time for Zelim. Being awarded the ISO 21195 certification reinforced the capabilities of our ZOE system, giving us even more credibility and potential for growth. John will play a vital role in continuing to expand our global reach, increasing the uptake of our life-saving technology across the world.”
Cumming comments: “I am delighted to be joining the Zelim team at such an important point in its growth. There is significant untapped potential for Zelim’s technologies across the global maritime sector. The combination of advanced software models and highly skilled engineers developing computer vision-based solutions for object detection and tracking, positions us to deliver world-leading systems that save lives and address some of the industry’s most complex challenges.”
