Giles Scott joins Team USA America’s Cup bid

American Racing Challenger Team USA has appointed Giles Scott as sailing director as preparations continue for the 38th America’s Cup in 2027.

Scott, 39, is a British double Olympic gold medallist and four-time Finn Gold Cup winner, and will report to team CEO Ken Read.

The team says Scott will help oversee the sailing programme and performance strategy, working with management and crew as the campaign builds. American Racing Challenger Team USA, representing Challenging Yacht Club Sail Newport, was confirmed as an official challenger for the 38th America’s Cup earlier this month.

American Racing Challenger Team USA was founded by Czech billionaire Karel Komárek and British entrepreneur Chris Welch, with the campaign led by Ken Read.

Komárek founded KKCG, an international investment group with interests in energy, technology, entertainment and maritime ventures, and also competes regularly in offshore racing at an international level. KKCG is a major shareholder at Ferretti Group, and has recently been embroiled in a dispute with the Italian boatbuilder over an attempted takeover bid.

Welch is the founder of ESB Holdings, and has experience brokering commercial agreements in Formula One, including work with McLaren Racing, Ferrari and Williams Racing.

“I’m delighted to be joining American Racing Challenger at such an important moment for the team,” says Scott. “The America’s Cup is an incredible challenge blending fast-paced racing with cutting-edge technical development, making it one of the most demanding and exciting competitions in the sport.

“This project brings together a compelling vision, strong leadership and a real desire to compete at the very top. I’m looking forward to working closely with Ken and the wider team to build a competitive program and ensure we’re as prepared as possible heading into the cup.”

Read adds: “Giles is one of the most accomplished sailors of his generation, and his experience, mindset and attention to detail will be invaluable to this campaign. Bringing the right people together is absolutely critical to delivering on our vision, and Giles is a perfect example of the calibre we’re assembling.

“With the timeframes we’re working to, getting the chemistry right from day one is essential. You need a group that can come together quickly, trust each other and perform under extreme pressure – Giles will play a huge role in helping us build that environment.”

The team has already secured sailing assets from American Magic, including the AC75 yacht Patriot and two AC40 platforms. These will form the basis of its preparation for the 38th America’s Cup, which is scheduled to take place in Naples in spring 2027.
