Med Group expands production as Tykun targets larger chase boat market

Tykun is preparing to move further into the larger, high-performance chase boat market after its parent company – Med Group – declares its new production facility is fully operational.

The investment is intended to support the construction of larger and more technically complex vessels while bringing more of the manufacturing process in-house. As Marco Galimberti, chief executive officer of Med Group, says: “We believed in this company from the moment we acquired it four years ago. We started with a business focused on the RIB segment up to 12-metres, but as the market evolved and new technological demands emerged, we recognised the need to broaden both our vision and our production capabilities.”

Capacity for larger builds

The shipyard, located in Italy’s upper Adriatic region, has been developed as part of Med Group’s long-term manufacturing strategy, with the space and infrastructure needed to build larger boats more efficiently, while improving production control and reducing the need to outsource parts of the build process.

Med Group says retaining production here also allows it to continue working with the area’s specialist marine manufacturing workforce with, as Galimberti says: “The space and infrastructure required to build larger vessels with greater safety and efficiency, enhanced process control, and reduced reliance on subcontracted operations.”

The expansion reflects changes within the Tykun product range. While the business originally concentrated on RIBs, it has increasingly developed larger aluminium platforms for professional, operational and leisure applications.

From professional boats to superyachts

Tykun says its current range is based on a platform originally developed by Med Group for professional, government and defence customers before being adapted for leisure boating.

Today, the company produces aluminium chase boats and tenders aimed at the superyacht market, with an emphasis on performance, safety and flexible layouts. The company says experience gained in demanding commercial and operational environments has been carried across into its leisure products.

Having design, engineering and production under one roof is expected to help the company manage projects of varying complexity while maintaining closer oversight of manufacturing.

The expanded production capability is expected to support further growth in the international chase boat market as demand develops for larger, more technically advanced vessels.
